Bio

Flutist Meghan Jacoby has performed as a chamber and orchestral musician throughout the US, England, Italy, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, and Cuba. Meghan is principal flute with the chamber orchestra Symphony by the Sea and piccolo player with the Cape Ann Symphony.

She has also performed with the Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), and with the Portland, Indian Hill, Cape Cod, Plymouth, New Bedford, and Atlantic Symphony Orchestras. As a chamber musician, she has performed with Callithumpian Consort, Radius Ensemble, and the Vento Chiaro Woodwind Quintet. A new music enthusiast, Meghan has performed at the New Music Forum’s Festival of Contemporary Music in Oakland, California, the Society of Composers, Inc. convention in New York, New Music Brandeis, Boston New Music Initiative, Center for New Music in San Francisco, and Brave New Works. She has twice been a guest artist at the International Festival of Flutists in Lima, Peru. A passionate pedagogue, Meghan is on faculty at Phillips Academy Andover, Concord Academy, Powers Music School, and, in the summers, the Cremona International Music Academy in Cremona, Italy. Also in the summers, she is the Artistic Director for Music on the Hill, a summer chamber music program for young musicians. Her primary teachers include Michelle Caimotto, Linda Toote, Robert Willoughby, and Trevor Wye. Meghan holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from Boston University.

Teaching

A passionate teacher, Meghan’s students are consistently accepted into Boston’s top youth orchestras and the country’s top summer programs.

Her goal as a teacher is to help each student become the best musician they can be, whether this is for the pure enjoyment of playing an instrument, winning an audition for a youth orchestra, gaining entrance into music school, or picking up their instrument after a 30-year hiatus. Students are met at all levels of ability and guided through to the next level of playing and performing. Meghan is a passionate pedagogue who takes pride in solving problems and making sure students have a solid understanding of fundamentals.

Lessons are structured to help students become well-rounded flutists. Each week, students prepare tone exercises, scales, finger exercises/technical patterns, etudes, and solo repertoire. Sight-reading is also a part of every lesson. Music theory and history are discussed when appropriate, usually in some form at each lesson, in order to help students develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the music they are studying. Proper posture, hand position, and breathing are also carefully approached subjects. Much attention is paid to intonation and musicality, no matter the experience level of the student. Careful focus on all of these aspects of flute playing and musicianship from the very beginning of a student’s study ensures proper fundamentals and a solid set-up for whichever path music may take them in life. Students are taught with a methodical approach to learning and practicing. Conversations about practice strategies and practice routines are tailored to each student.

Meghan is on the faculty at Phillips Academy Andover, Concord Academy, Powers Music School, and, in the summers, the Cremona International Music Academy in Cremona, Italy. She is also the Artistic Director of Music on the Hill, a summer program for young musicians. Her students regularly earn spots in the MMEA District and All-State ensembles as well as the many youth orchestra programs in the Boston area, including every ensemble at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. Her students have also been accepted at some of the country’s top college music programs as well as summer programs such as Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), Interlochen, Domaine Forget, and Aria International Summer Academy, among others.
